Abu Dhabi T10 League: Being a fast bowler and captain was not easy, says Wahab Riaz

Kolkata: Wahab Riaz, the senior Pakistan paceman who may have lost some of his steam at 36 years, is savouring the triumph of his team Deccan Gladiators in the fifth edition of Abu Dhabi T10 League on Saturday. Deccan, who emerged runners-up in the fourth edition of the tournament earlier this year, did one better when they wallopped Delhi Bulls by 56 runs in the final.

Coming out on top in a format which is more unpredictable than T20 and gives no allowance for reputation, Wahab’s team maintained a consistency and tamed the in-form Bulls thanks to a blitzkrieg from Andre Russell. ‘‘Captaincy is a responsibility and an honour, and I enjoyed my stint as the captain of Deccan Gladiators and the icing on the cake was the Abu Dhabi T10 title. But having said that, I would also like to add being a fast bowler and a captain is always a tough job, especially in a fast format like the T10 where things happen very quickly and you have to take quick decisions or else the match might just slip away.

‘‘Your job becomes a little easy when you have a team as experienced as ours and a coach like Mushtaq Ahmed, whose knowledge and understanding of the game is of encyclopaedic proportion,’’ said Wahab, one of the finest left-arm pacers Pakistan had ever produced.

Speaking to Gulf News during an exclusive interview, Riaz was effusive in praise about Wanindu Hasaranga, the leg spinner-allrounder of Sri Lanka who made a huge impact in international cricket over last year and was Man of the Tournament with a haul of 21 wickets. Describing him as a ‘complete package,’ the Deccan captain said: Hasaranga is undoubtedly one of the finest upcoming youngsters in the cricketing horizon at the moment. He is one of the best allrounders in the shorter formats and the way he is performing, there is no doubt that he has a very bright future ahead.

‘‘Hasaranga showed that he was special as a youngster as when he started off his ODI career, he became only the third player in history to claim a hat-trick on debut (against Zimbabwe). Not just one, but some of the things that make Hasaranga so special is his consistency, accuracy and variation in bowling and a very level-headed batsmen, without any fuss who keeps things simple but gets the job done. He is also a brilliant fielder, all in all, a complete package and a captain’s delight.

Any conversation with Wahab will be incomplete without a reference to Pakistan’s stirring show in the last T20 World Cup in the UAE and the veteran, who missed the cut for the team, was understandably proud of the Babar Azam-led boys. ‘‘Pakistan always has been a very talented side but sadly, we haven’t been able to perform to our potential on more occasion than one. It was indeed very heartwarming to see the way Pakistan team performed during the World T20 because that is the kind of cricket you expect from them. We can be unbeatable on our day but if we can be a little more consistent, then we will be unbeatable on other days as well,’’ he said.

Finally, a word on Shaheen Afridi? ‘‘Shaheen had a great start to his international career and people have already started comparing him with other great left-arm fast bowlers of Pakistan. Though it is a little too early for any such comparisons, one thing is sure that he is here to stay. He will always have an advantage over the others because of his height and he is able to make the ball jump from an awkward length – making it impossible for batsmen to play. Give him some time, I am sure and he will develop into a very successful cricketer for Pakistan,’’ he added.

Gaurav Grover, owner of Deccan Gladiators, with the Abu Dhabi T10 trophy.

This is just the beginning for us, Deccan owner says

Gaurav Grover, the young owner of Deccan Gladiators, says the Abu Dhabi T10 title is just the beginning of something great for them and the team would like to build on their success. ‘‘I can very well say that this is just the beginning of some wonderful time in the future. We have been learning every year and each and every lesson has helped us reach where we are today. We want to build on this success and become one of the best teams in world cricket, both on and off the field,’’ he said in an interview.

Asked to rate the T10 League’s success after a surfeit of cricket already with IPL and World T20, Grover said: ‘‘I would rather say: more the merrier! I am die hard cricket fan and I never get tired watching cricket. Every format has its own charm, how you feel watching a Test match is not same as ODIs or T20 or T10. That is the beauty of the game.

‘‘As far as T10 is concerned, I strongly believe that T10 has a very bright future. New established brands are getting associated with T10, players are earning more for less time on the field and the fan base is increasing. The ICC-approved T10 format is also talked about as a strong contender to make it to the Olympics,’’ he added.

Abu Dhabi T10: We always believed that we could win, says Deccan Gladiators coach Mushtaq Ahmed

Deccan Gladiators head coach Mushtaq Ahmed said that they always believed that this team could win the Abu Dhabi T10 title. Deccan Gladiators defeated Delhi Bulls by 56 runs on Saturday to win their maiden title in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.

“We always believed that we can win! The self-belief helped us to go out there and express ourselves and play a fearless brand of cricket which was visible in all our performances all through the tournament. I couldn’t have asked for a more professional approach from this bunch which executed everything the way we planned,” said the coach, after his boys put up a thoroughly professional show and stamp their authority in the shortest version of the game.

Put into bat, Gladiators rode on Andre Russell (90 runs, 32 balls, 9×4, 7×6) and Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s (59 runs, 28 balls, 3×4, 5×6) record breaking opening stand to post 159 for no wicket, at the end of their stipulated overs. Chandrapaul Hemraj kept the Bulls in the game with a quickfire 42 off 20 deliveries but Odean Smith, Wanindu Hasaranga and Tymal Mills picked up two wickets each to restrict the Delhi team to 103 for the loss of seven wickets.

Skipper Wahab Riaz congratulated the team on the remarkable title triumph and said: “In this tournament, we showed tremendous fighting spirit, and took the game away from our opposition by some incredibly dominating performance in every aspect of the game. Not just in one game, but we maintained that in almost every game all through the tournament. We also backed each other to succeed and it helped us bond as a team, and in fast-paced high pressure games like this, it is important that you have each other’s back all the time.”

Deccan Gladiators team owner Gaurav Grover added: “We came close once before, but this time we couldn’t miss it. I owe this win to complete team work of each and everyone associated with the team. The hard work that the boys have put in and the dedication and determination that each one has displayed during this campaign is highly commendable. I also thank the fans for supporting us and believing in us and I owe this win to the millions of Deccan Gladiators fans out there. Keep showing your support to us like this, and we will be able to create many such memorable moments in the future.”

Abu Dhabi T10 proves that it can transform UAE cricketers into international stars like what IPL did to Indian cricket

Abu Dhabi T10 proves that it can transform UAE cricketers into international stars like what IPL did to Indian cricket

Zahoor Khan and Abdul Shakoor hogged the limelight and bagged the man of the match awards in matches contested by the legends of the game.  If not for the opportunity they’ve got through the Abu Dhabi T10, many of the legendary cricketers who are playing with these UAE cricketers may never know who they are and whether they are capable of winning matches

Four years ago, before the start of the first edition of the T10 tournament, Shaji Ul Mulk, whom I had interacted with during his playing days in UAE domestic cricket and as head of the Ajman Cricket Council and Emirates Cricket Board member, had mentioned to me that he had big news, which would create a flutter in cricket. During the interview that followed, Shaji Ul Mulk revealed his plans of staging a 10-over format international tournament.

As soon as this interview appeared in the Gulf News, not many took it seriously and considered it to be a tournament that may just be a festival event meant to have fun. A few even expressed their apprehension on whether international cricketers would join to play in a format that had never been experimented before. The vision of Shaji Ul Mulk, who is the chairman of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, was so convincing that he conceptualized it to be a hit among the fans. This format won the hearts of the fans within the first few matches of the first edition and all seats at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, which was the venue for the first two editions, got sold out forcing many to return home disappointed at not being able to witness the action live.

When One Day 50-over matches and the T20 format were introduced, there were many purists of the game who believed that these formats would destroy cricketers’ skills.  There were many such skeptics in the UAE too who considered the T10 format to cause more harm to the game and would in no way contribute to the development of domestic cricketers.

It should be noted that the same was talked about Indian Premier League (IPL) when it was launched. There were comments that it would destroy bowlers and transform batsmen into bang-bang style players. However, today if Indian cricket has such a huge reservoir of talented cricketers, it is mainly due to IPL. Team India’s bench strength, even for Test matches, is contributed by players who came to the fore through IPL.

One can expect the same to happen, if not happening, in UAE cricket. Players from the UAE picked by the Abu Dhabi T10 franchises are hogging the limelight. On the first day of the fourth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10, UAE opener Abdul Shakoor bagged the man of the match for Maratha Arabians in a match contested by experienced international cricketers like former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab Riaz, Wayne Parnell, Nicholas Pooran and Lendl Simmons.

On the second day, UAE medium-pacer Zahoor Khan emerged as the man of the match for Deccan Gladiators in a match contested by legends like Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, and Kieron Pollard. Even UAE’s Rohan Mustafa, who played for Team Abu Dhabi, bowled brilliantly in that match. If not for the opportunity they’ve got through the Abu Dhabi T10, many of the legendary cricketers who are playing with these UAE cricketers may never know who they are and whether they are capable of winning matches.

Today, if the Indian pace attack is one of the strongest in the world with new entrants like Mohammad Siraj and T. Natarajan, it is because they sparkled playing alongside international stars and proved to be match-winners in the IPL.

Last year, after a few UAE players appeared in the Abu Dhabi T10, they got opportunities to play in T20 leagues in Canada and the USA. So very soon, Abu Dhabi T10 should be able to do what the IPL did in transforming domestic cricketers into international stars. Many Abu T10 franchises have picked UAE’s most promising cricketers into their teams, and they may well go on to become internationally acclaimed cricketers soon.

Deccan Gladiators have set their eyes on the upcoming edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League starting from January 28 with the final scheduled to take place on February 06, 2021. West Indies legend Kieron Pollard has replaced veteran Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson as the captain of the side.

The team is a perfect mixture of experience and young talent. With Afghanistan wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Shahzad at the top, Deccan Gladiators can expect some fiery start when the ball starts rolling in the lands of UAE. They also have the luxury of international talents like Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka, while Colin Ingram is there to make his presence count.

Deccan Gladiators aim to win the trophy

Moreover, the presence of former South Africa cricketer Imran Tahir will bolster their bowling attack. A tricky customer, Tahir is a legend when it comes to the shortest format. He has enjoyed all over the world including IPL and will look to lead the pack from the front.

Meanwhile, the Gladiators will miss the service of Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara, who is out of the tournament due to an injury. The 24-year-old Tasmanian fast bowler Aaron Summers will replace the Sri Lankan. He has experience of playing in the BBL and PSL which will add value to Deccan Gladiators.

The promoter of Deccan Gladiators Mr. Gaurav Grover believes that this short format league has a lot of potentials and is hopeful that they can win the trophy this time around for the first time. They open their account against Pune Devil on January 28 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Pollard, who captained Mumbai Indians in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), will lead Deccan Gladiators in the upcoming Abu Dhabi T10 League. The star all-rounder, who is famous for his explosive batting, is eagerly waiting for the tournament to begin.

“We have been eagerly waiting for this series to commence, as it has been very exciting during the draft sessions. Captaincy is a part of the job. You don’t have to be the leader to be a leader,” Pollard said in a statement.

“I have been a part of the franchise for two years. Being a team leader it matters to me to step in and try to do the best for the team,” he added.

Deccan Gladiators are all set to ride on the winning wave at the T10 League starting from January 28 in Abu Dhabi. With the change in helm this year, Gladiators will be striving to seize the trophy. They have previously proved their metal by running up to finals in the last season.

Eight teams will vie for glory in the fourth edition of the T10 tournament at the Zayed Cricket Stadium

While winning the Abu Dhabi T10 title remains the biggest ambition of Deccan Gladiators owner Gaurav Grover, the Dubai-based Indian businessman is also championing the cause of UAE cricket.

Impressed with Zahoor Khan’s exploits for his team at the 2019 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10, Grover hopes the UAE pace bowler will rise to the occasion once again in the fourth edition of the tournament (January 28-February 6).

“Of course, our coach Mushtaq Ahmed makes the strategies. The kind of players that we have, the batting depth we have, I am very confident. Then in bowling you must have heard about Zahoor Khan, the UAE talent. We have retained him, so that’s a big thing. He has got a lot of potential. He is a key player in our team,” Grover, whose team lost to Maratha Arabians in the 2019 T10 final, told Khaleej Times.

“Then we have Kieron Pollard, Imran Tahir and Sunil Narine. So having these kind of names in the squad, we are confident of playing well and winning the tournament this season.”

Grover’s longing for the noise fans make at the stadium, but he will respect the decision of the organisers if the star-studded tournament will be held in an empty Zayed Cricket Stadium to stop the spread of the Covid-19 infection.

“Of course, there is a buzz when you have fans at the stadium. Stars are only stars when you have fans behind them. But being in this pandemic situation, we want every fan to be safe. If Abu Dhabi Cricket decides to host it behind closed doors, we should abide by that. It’s only for our players and fans’ safety,” he said.

“Look, having the tournament in these tough situations, was a big challenge. So hats off to the government, Abu Dhabi Cricket and Shaji Ul Mulk, who is behind this T10 programme, for the work they have done to ensure the safety of all the players and individuals.”

Pollard expressed that the T10 format suits his style of cricket, “The thrill and excitement of T10 are limitless. But it’s actually not too dissimilar to the kind of cricket I grew up playing. It’s not about ‘see ball hit ball’. You need to be able to think on your feet, anticipate and execute plans without pausing too much. It suits me, to be honest, and my experience stands me in good stead when reading the opposition.” Pollard added that a team is never out of the game in T10 cricket, “It’s (T10) a great concept and one that’s designed to create continuous excitement. You are never out of the game so those watching on the screen are glued to it every ball.”

The 33-year-old said that he is very excited to play with the likes of Sunil Narine and Imran Tahir in the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, “I’m most excited about playing with the group that we have assembled at Deccan Gladiators. I can’t wait to go out there with match-winners like Narine, Tahir, Shahzad, Ingram, the local UAE star Zahoor and others. We also have a few surprises up our sleeves for our opponents.” The Deccan Gladiators team owner Gaurav Grover expressed that the side is aiming nothing short of winning the trophy, “The target of Deccan Gladiators this time would definitely be to win the trophy. With the changes in the helm this year, there are high expectations from the Gladiators. We have taken care of every flaw we had, which might have been the reason for last year’s defeat (in the final).” Grover added that the Gladiators have enough firepower to win the competition, “We have West Indian powerhouse as our captain – Keiron Pollard and our Icon Player himself is fearless and unbounded spinner – Sunil Narine. Also, our team is packed with threatening bowlers such as fast bowler Aaron Summers and (leg-spinner) Imran Tahir. Talking about batsmen, we have Mohammad Shahzad, who is also a wicketkeeper.” Abu Dhabi T10 is the world’s only ten-over cricket tournament officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and licensed by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). It is the first-ever internationally approved ten-over format competition. The second edition of Abu Dhabi T10 will be held from 28th January – 6th February 2021. Abu Dhabi T10 is a UAE product that has grown into a globally accepted cricket format. Matches have a 10-over-a-side format and duration of 45 minutes a side totalling 90 minutes of play.

Earlier, Legendary Pakistan cricketer Mudassar Nazar, who scored over 6,500 runs and took over 150 wickets in international cricket, has been appointed as the technical director for T10 Sports Management (TSM).

The former all-rounder joins T10 Sports Management just before the start of the fourth season of Abu Dhabi T10 league.

“We are in the entertainment business, whether it was 100 years ago or it’s now. If the audience is not entertained, then we don’t move an inch. Any cricketer, who is in love with the game, will love to watch any format and this is a very exciting format. If I was still playing, I would have tried this format,” said Nazar.

“I would have trained hard and probably changed my approach to the game and that is why it’s so fascinating to see players who are so good in the four-day and five-day formats and then they change their game and skill and then try and outperform people in this event,” he added.

Shaji Ul Mulk, chairman, T10 Sports Management, said, “Being one of the greats of the game, Mudassar will have a lot of valuable insights to share with us, which will be a big boost for the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament. We are looking forward to a wonderful working relationship with him.”

Not sure if I would have enjoyed playing T10, says Azharuddin

Abu Dhabi, Jan 19 (IANS) Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin is all set to take up the role of team mentor for the Northern Warriors in the upcoming season of Abu Dhabi T10 starting January 28 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.

Azharuddin said he will be observing all the practice sessions and matches carried out by Warriors very keenly.

“I will be watching everything very keenly as the mentor of the Northern Warriors. Actually, the coach runs the team, so I will be giving advice to the players and coaches as the mentor of the team. If I find something is not up to the mark or my advice is needed for something, that’s when I will step in as a mentor,” he said.

Even though the Warriors have many star players such as Lendl Simmons and Nicholas Pooran in their side, Azharuddin made it very clear that he is not looking forward to working with only a few players.
